How To Help

We are an all-volunteer organization that relies on donations to achieve our goals! Help us save animal lives and end pet overpopulation! Our costs have sharply increased since we have implemented two new outreach programs: Fix The Mamas, and the SpayShuttle. These programs target those who are most likely to surrender animals to the Shelter, or produce strays that later have to be euthanized. They have been enormously successful!

We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Your donations are tax detuctible and most importantly, you will really help to save animal lives! Please make a secure donation online with your major credit-card or PayPal account by clicking a donate button.

If you live near Louisa, VA, please save your tin food cans for SNAP.

The tin cans are recycled into planters and candle-holders for sale by a local cooperative. They donate 10 cents per can to SNAP.

To give us your TIN cans, please:

  • Peel and wash them.
  • Take the tops off, but not the bottoms
  • Don't crush them!
  • Deliver them to a a little white trailer with SNAP painted on the side, located in the parking lot beside the old fire house, across from the court house.

The proceeds from Animal Friendly license plates sold in Louisa County go directly to help SNAP save lives through spay/neuter. Funds from Animal Friendly plates purchased by out of county residents go to other spay/neuter groups around the State. Your Animal Friendly plate shows you support the intelligent and compassionate solution to pet overpopulation!

If you live near Louisa or Charlottesville, VA, consider donating clothing for SNAP. We consign items at Glad Rags in Charlottesville. Since this is a consignment store, not a Thrift store, only top quality items are accepted.

Clothing has to be in PERFECT condition, without tears, stains, buttons missing, or much wear. Vintage clothing (anything made before 1985) is also needed, and doesn't have to be in such perfect shape. Items also need to be in season.

To make a clothing donation:

•Inspect potential items carefully.
•Have items clean, pressed, and on hangers.

You can take them to Glad Rags, but call ahead (434) 979-1816 to make an appointment. Glad Rags must routinely reject many items, as they know what will sell, so don't feel bad if your stuff isn't all accepted.

If you have a large amount of clothing in great condition, contact us and we may be able to arrange to have them picked up.

There are several opportunities to provide foster care for animals near Louisa County. Foster care does more than give animals extra time to get adopted, although this is an essential function. A good foster home also gives animals a home-like environment, where they can be socialized, and good manners can begin. A well-fostered dog is less likely to be surrendered later by its owner.

Some foster parents are able to take unweaned litters and bottle-feed them until they are old enough for adoption. Unweaned litters in almost all Shelters have to be put down unless there is a foster parent available.

In a foster home, animals are less stressed, and exposed to less disease. They can recover from their spay/neuter better. In addition, foster parents get to know their animals' personalities, so they are better able to ensure that their animals find a good match in their permanent home.

If you are interested in fostering, contact these groups:

Animal Connections, if you are interested in slightly SMALLER DOGS. Animal Connections also takes some larger dogs and some older puppies. This group has been adopting out animals from the Louisa County Animal Shelter longer than any other.

Louisa Humane Society, if you can foster a LARGER DOG or an ADULT CAT. It's a little harder to adopt out large animals, so be prepared to have your foster animal for up to several months if necessary. Larger dogs often have wonderful, warm personalities; it's easy to fall in love with them!

All groups cover medical expenses for the foster animals in their custody, and all spay/neuter before adoption.

Volunteer to help at adoption outings! it's a nice opportunity to hang out with animals and animal-lovers.
