Welcome to SNAP Louisa

SNAP plans to put an end to pet overpopulation in the Louisa, Va and Lake Anna areas by the year 2010.

Established as a 501(c)3 non-profit in 1996, we have subsidized spay/neuter for pets of low-income families near Louisa County, VA. We also perform area outreach on the life-saving value of spay/neuter, animal identification, and responsible stewardship of companion animals. We welcome an opportunity to be of assistance to you, and would love to have you join us!

Next Spay/Neuter dates 2008: Nov. 24, Dec. 8, & 22

Did you know kittens can be spayed or neutered as early as 8 weeks of age? The ideal age is at about 12-16 weeks, unless they are going into a home where they might not get sterilized at all, in which case earlier is better.

In addition to the hundreds of cats that must be put down at the Louisa Shelter each year for lack of room, there are thousands of free-roaming cats in Louisa. One pair of cats can theoretically produce 420,000 offspring in 7 years. Is it any wonder we have a cat overpopulation problem in our county?

If you have kittens in your home, you can be part of the solution, by getting them spayed or neutered before they reach maturity. Females sterilized before their first heat are less likely to have mammary (breast) cancer later in life. Males sterilized before 5 months of age are less likely to spray. The mother cat can have her surgery at the same time as her kittens (or earlier; at least 2 weeks after the kittens have been weaned.)
