Low Income Assistance

Financial assistance is available to low income citizens of Louisa County, VA and the Lake Anna area. to spay or neuter their pets.

Prices vary according to the pet owner’s ability to pay. We do not turn anyone away for lack of funds. People who can pay a little more help us save more animal lives. Unfortunately, our funds are limited, and we are not able to subsidize care of sick or injured animals. If your animal is not well, please see your veterinarian before signing up with SNAP.

Required vaccinations are the owner's responsibility.

For more information, please contact SNAP.

If you do not live near Louisa, VA (or the and Lake Anna area) please visit www.1888pets911.org or www.spayusa.org to get nationwide reduced cost Spay/Neuter information.

SpayShuttle

SNAP launched its SpayShuttle program in May of 2002. Our spay/neuter assistance program had been doing fine since its inception in 1996, but we weren’t reaching every client who needed our help.

Louisa doesn’t have enough veterinarians to meet the demand. Some clients don't have transportation. Local vets don't do juvenile spay/neuter. Rescue agencies need quick service to get their animals sterilized before adoption.

The answer? Transport! With the help of a PETsMART Charities grant, SNAP purchased a used ambulance to take animals to area spay/neuter clinics. Volunteers drive the animals to area spay/neuter clinics and wait all day for the animals, then bring them back to Louisa, where their people eagerly await them.

The SpayShuttle goes to area spay/neuter clinics at least once a week, carrying 15 to 20 animals per trip. Owners drop off their animals early in the morning in Louisa, and pick them up that evening. In its first year, the Shuttle allowed SNAP to quadruple the number of sterilizations subsidized.

Your donations are welcome. To volunteer for the SpayShuttle, to get more information, or to receive assistance, Contact Us.

Fix The Mamas

We at SNAP are always looking for creative ways to decrease the number of animals surrendered to the Shelter by their owners. In many parts of the country, Spay/Neuter efforts have been so successful that surrendering litters is no longer a problem. For those Shelters, the main reasons for owner surrenders are behavior problems or landlord problems.

Not so in the Louisa Shelter. During certain seasons, large numbers of litters end up at the shelter. All too often, the people surrendering litters come back 6 months later with another litter from the same mother pet.

When SNAP heard about another Shelter's FIX THE MAMAs program, we immediately borrowed the idea. Now anyone bringing a litter into the Shelter gets a Fix The Mamas Certificate. The mother dog or cat is spayed for FREE, and, if necessary, we will pick the animal up from its owner and transport her to be spayed.

The program has been very successful. Pet owners are grateful for the help. Often they have other pets at home, and SNAP can assist them with those animals as well.

Feral Cat Program (“TNR”)

The newest addition to the SNAP family is the Trap, Neuter, Return program (“TNR”).

TNR is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Healthy feral cats are then returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers.

The program is a proven method to controlling the outdoor cat population. SNAP has adopted Alley Cat Allies protocol. Please visit www.alleycat.org to learn more about TNR. Please call or email SNAP to learn how you can help.
