Spay/Neuter Services

Millions of unwanted dogs and cats are destroyed in our nation's shelters every year.  Spaying or neutering will help end this needless killing.  SNAP provides opportunity and availability for low cost pet spay and neuter services to Louisa County and surrounding county residents.  We schedule, coordinate and monitor provision of services which are contracted through area spay/neuter clinics.  Currently our surgeries are performed at the Shenandoah Valley Spay Neuter Clinic in Harrisonburg, VA and at the Charlottesville -Albemarle SPCA in Charlottesville, VA.  Shuttle service is provided to and from the clinics and is available to all regardless of financial aid eligibility.

Surgical sterilization by removal of reproductive organs in pets is called "spay" in female and "neuter" for male pets.  Some of the benefits of sterilization may includes:

  • improved pet health and longevity
  • elimination of "heat cycles" and mating behaviors
  • reduction of aggression
  • reduction or elimination of marking or spraying
  • decreased inclination to wander or roam

Kittens can be spayed or neutered as early as 8 weeks of age and/or 2 pounds.  Puppies can be sterilized at 3 months.  The ideal age is about 12-16 weeks.  Adult dogs and cats must be in good health and weight.  Elderly pets are at greater risk for complications and require caution in scheduling these services.

To comply with Virginia, all pets 3 months of age or older scheduled for sterilization must have current proof of rabies vaccination.  The clinic will provide this vaccination at the time of surgery if the pet has not yet received one.

  • Low Income Assistance

While fees for spay/neuter services are significantly reduced, we understand that there are families who may require further financial assistance.  No pet will be turned away due to the family's inability to pay.  Prices can be adjusted to accommodate their financial need.  Every effort will be made to support responsible pet owners seeking spay/neuter services.  Funding for SNAP services are provided solely by grants and donations and all funds are applied to the provision of SNAP's function in its service to the community.   We are not able to subsidize the care of sick or injured animals. If your animal is not well, please see a veterinarian before signing up with SNAP.

 Adopt a cat

SNAP has recently received a grant from PetSmart Charities to provide free spay/neuter and basic  vaccination services for cats adopted from the Louisa County Shelter.  The grant runs through June 30, 2010 or until funds are exhausted.  SNAP hopes that people will take advantage of this opportunity to reduce the number of cats that are euthanized at the shelter.  Here are links to the Louisa County Shelter and Pet Finders

Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR)

TNR is a full-management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated and sterilized by veterinarians. Healthy feral cats are then returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers.

This program is a proven method of controlling the outdoor feral cat population. SNAP has adopted the Alley Cat Allies protocol. Visit Alley Cat Allies and Voices for Animals to learn more.

If you have a population of feral cats that you would like to have sterilized, please call (540) 967-3573 or email us today!
